Hey all so I need some help. I have a 79' 4WD, I recently replaced the transmission and transfer case and do not have a shifter knob that indicates what positions are 2H,4H, 4L... Also I took it out the other day for the first time at highway speeds and it wasn't long before I noticed that I was starting loose a significant amount of power, it doesn't accelerate nearly as well as it did prior to the highway trip. I did decide to pull it off to the side of the road and tow it before anything catastrophically failed. I'm wondering so the way that I've been determining what position the 4wd shifter stick is in is by looking through the hole in the floorboard because I can see the transfer case axle, so I assumed that when the transfer case axle isn't spinning 4wd is disengaged, is this correct? Also would it even matter what position the 4wd is in so long as the locking hubs aren't locked, or am I wrong about this? My fear is that I've been driving it in the wrong position, if this were the case what components would be damaged? Front axle? Also if anyone can send me a picture of the 4wd shifter knob or describe the configuration to me that'd be great.
