howdy, all!

recently acquired an 80 Luv as project. engine cranks fine but no spark from distributor cap to plugs. i have spark from the coil to the cap, but no spark coming out of the cap plug terminals to plugs. friend mentioned that potential culprit could also be a crank sensor(?). does the luv have a cranks sensor, and location of said sensor?

any advice would be greatly appreciated.

No crank sensor on these antiques. The points could be stuck closed....

If spark makes it to the cap but not out the only 2 items are the cap and rotor.

So, you have spark at the coil wire at the cap?

Obviously there is something between the cap and rotor is wrong. Check the rotor with a VOM and same with the cap. Make sure the cap has the spring and carbon tip

When that happened to me in my luv where I wasn't getting any spark to the plugs it turned out to be the points that were bad in mine. Try replacing the points on the distributor not expensive I believe I paid 3 dollars for the points at auto zone. Also just make sure you have good ground to the engine block so the current has a path to ground and travels through the wire to the spark plug thus giving it the spark.

will do. but if am checking the rotor with VOM, what info am i looking for? seems that the cap would need to be off while i cranked the engine - thereby negating any juice that may be coming to rotor.
thanks

will do. the old guy that had the truck previously indicated he had changed points but i will move forward on replacing as well to confirm (and ease of mind). i ordered a shop manual for this truck, awaiting arrival....you happen to know the what the gap setting would be on the points?
thanks

Starting at the coil you need 12 volts at the positive terminal with the ignition on. Have someone wearing a glove hold a spark plug pushed in the coil wire to the side of the intake to achieve a grounding of the spark plug. Remove the wire for the negative terminal of the coil. Take a wire from the negative terminal and tap it to the side of the negative terminal with the ignition on. When you tap the wire to the ground, you should get a blue, or very white spark at the plug. If this works the coil and supply to the coil is good.

Remove the test wire form the coil, remove the black wire at the points. read from the wire where it connectes to the point to the wire you removed from the negatinve side of the coil. There should be continuity on this wire. Reconnect the wire you removed from the points, reconnect the wire you remove from the negative to the coil. Get a plastic knife. Its better to do the next part when it is dark.

Have your friend hold the plug where you got the blue spark to the side of the motor. if you take the plastic knife and open and close the points, you should get a spark at the points, and a spark at the plug as the point close.

thanks for all info/pics.

have the single points situation here. will attempt efforts you've suggested. by the way, points should be gapped at the 'high point', correct?
thanks again

Also note the gap or dwell will affect the timing, reset the timing after you have the dwell or gap correct.
