I posted earlier regarding difficulty in getting spark to plugs. We got spark to plugs finally and truck purred like a kitten. At that time, we only had 6V measuring at the spark plug boot but was engine idled fine. However, tried to update vacuum lines layout and had setback where messed up starting...now got lines straight but the spark at the spark plug boot only meters out to 3V.

Two questions:
Should there be 12V at the spark plug boot? Seems like 6V worked fine but still don't know why dont have 12V at the spark plug boot.

Having had some success in idling the truck with 6V at spark plug boot, what would cause the decrease in voltage to 3V at the spark plug boot?

Thanks

The spark plug boot as in the insulator between the wire and plug?

Somehow I don't think you're only getting 6V at the spark plug wires, more like 15,000 volts. My picture is of spark plug wires.

I think what you're talking about is the points wire to the ignition coil. And yes, that should get 6V due to running through the ballast resistor first.

To clarify....we were metering the new ignition coil and were getting 12V at the '+' side and 6V at the '-' side posts of the coil. Figured we would meter to see how much voltage we were getting at the spark plug so removed the spark plug boot and held the multimeter terminal to the metal bracket inside the boot. It metered out at 6V, thus, the question whether the ignition coil should be pushing 12V or 6V to the distributor/spark plugs.

Took the rebuild for first run on the county road yesterday evening and it struggled on the uphill sections of the road (was in 3rd gear at the time) as well as my uphill driveway. Any thoughts on potential culprit for lack of power on uphill situations? Have pretty much replaced all ignition components (ignition coil and ballast resistor / distributor cap / rotor / points / spark plugs / spark plug wires).

Thanks in advance.
