Hey hey, I am a new member and new LUV owner, picked up a stock 79’ 4x4 recently. No real questions yet but looks like a fun truck and stoked to get it on the road. Any advice? I sort of like the stock survivor look and won’t be doing any off-road so planning on keeping it unmolested. Better tires might be in order, haven’t found much info on AT type tires for the OEM wheels, any suggestions?

welcome.as far as wheels and tires,my 79 had been buried in mud for some time before I got it,and the rims were rusted nearly through.Even the steel belts rusted through, deforming the tires. I bought new "trailer" wheels in 15" and that of course gives you unlimited tire choice. good luck

If you still have the original 14" wheels, believe it or not the Walmart Douglas Xtra Trac tires are phenomenal. Between my wife and I we've used them on 3 vehicles.

But don't go get them if you're running 15" wheels. For some reason they are absolute crap.

But, the 14"? Best damned tire I've had in a long while. And that includes the 31" BFGoodrich A/T's that are on my Jeep right now. Those Walmart specials are top notch on the highway, get good traction on wet roads (very important here north of Seattle), and do better in the snow than anything less than an $800 set of studded snows (Blizzak).

Oh, and the last set my wife had on her Neon? 45,000 miles and still no sign of the wear indicators...

I might look into 15’s and would be interested if I could find something that looked accurate to the trucks original look, did LUV’s have an option for a 15” wheel when new?

Wonderful, I will check them out, I read that General makes a 205 x 14 x 8.5 not sure if it will clear the fenders. Might be an option.

My son got a set of Maxxis Bighorn tires through Pep Boys. he had to order them, and they are on stock 14" rims. He likes them.

Very cool, nice find and good idea, assuming the red truck is stock with the 14’s? Is there any problems with running 15’s.?

red truck is stock 14's. There are no problems running 15's, unless un-sprung weight is a concern for you.

It's not the diameter of the wheel that will pose a problem.

A 185/60/15 (stock on a Neon) is smaller in diameter than a 205/70/14 (which is stock for a Luv), but the wheel is bigger.

It's the tire that matters and a stock 205/70/14 is roughly the same outer diameter and width as a 185/75/15.

True. though I run 215 75r15 bfg all terrains...27.5" roughly...and there's plenty of room...still looks appropriate. use the conversion 215 divided by 25.4 times aspect ratio..in this case 0.75= sidewall height x2 for both sides of wheel ...plus wheel size 15" = overall diameter in inches

Heh, I just let Discount Tire do all the calculations for me with their handy page.

I dug around a bit and they are pretty pricey, at least the new / refinished wheel is, they would look good though.

America’s Tire (Discount tire) has the wagon wheel spoke rims, last time I checked around $60 a piece.

Nice looking truck! Very cool, are you restoring it? Mostly a stock build? Love the color! I am very new to trucks and LUVs. Have been interested in getting a 60's/70's micro truck and was looking at Datsun, hilux and wound up with a LUV survivor 4x4. Slightly different direction than I had intended.

Thanks. Yea, she's mostly stock. I'm putting a g200 in her in place of the g180. The color isn't stock, I was actually trying to match a Datsun 521/620 color. I'd really like to see some pictures of your LUV survivor!! 8)
