So far everyone's been pretty helpful with the newbie questions i've brought to the table so i'm on to the next issue. Keep in mind my overall luv knowledge is basic, but growing every day. I've got this lil 4 cyl engine with a leaky head gasket and a few other issues here and there. It's in fairly good shape overall but I filled up the tank recently and did the math - i'm sitting at around 10 mpg (!?!?!) and I'm not sure where I should start digging around.

I did a quick search on this forum and didn't see anything helpful for me so if there's someone out there patient enough to either give me a quick checklist of things to look at, or point me in the direction of an existing thread, i'd be grateful!

Knowns:
- Head gasket oil leak
- Carb probably needs cleaned
- Vacuum hoses underneath the air filter are rotten/cracked/missing (not sure what any of that does, and if that has any bearing on this issue)
- Everything is held together with Kansas dirt

SOS! I don't mind gettin' dirty, but I'm not sure where to start.

You said vacuum hoses.

Vacuum leaks always cause bad fuel mileage. I would start by fixing those because vacuum hose is cheap, you buy it by the foot at the auto parts store.

Still, even with a good carb I only ever got around 20 mpg and that was a '72, same as '73.

Do the vacuum lines then do a tuneup.

Then save your money for a Weber carburetor, although it's not an easy bolt on for a novice with a 73 (throttle linkage is wrong and you have to invent the right one).

a weber carb is anywhere from $250 on up for the 32/36.
I think I went right to weber's site and got it for about $248
