I am buying a 78 luv.. I am trying to find info about them there... so far not to bad... the search function here isn't the best...been reading for a day now... here is the question

I am going to do a sbc swap.. the truck has a stock rear end... when I try to search here for "rear end" it either has no search results or says something like the words are too common.

I found a few threads... can the stock rear end handle a stock 350 sbc? I see lots of talk about the s-10 (read the beer swap) rear and and ford rear ends... (question 1)

So whats the cheapest easiest rear end to put in... but then also get all 4 wheels to match.. if s-10 is 5 lug and luv front is 6 lug.. is there a wheel out there that has a 5 and 6 lug bolt patter you guys use? Or what are people doing to get matching wheels... I did see the 5 lug drill out rotors deal sticky... but I would think someone has figured out an easy way to put a better rear end in but get all matching wheels... ( question 2)

Thanks X

Yes. Depending on what your purpose is, it may not be ideal. The LUVs tended to be geared really low. I can't remember offhand what the 78 came with, but the 76 manual came with 4.56 gears and the auto had 4.1. If you're planning on driving it much and keep the stock rear, you'll probably want an overdrive transmission.

The s10 rear is pretty easy. Everything lines up, and most (all?) had 3.73 gears.

I met a guy once who had 5 lugs in the rear and 6 lugs up front. He had bought his wheels from Jeg's. The styles matched, but if you're wanting to carry a spare tire... you have to carry 2.

The easiest method is the S10 rear and the redrill, IMO.

Hotrod80 has a Toyota 5 lug conversion thread (small Ford pattern) but it seems like more trouble than it's worth.

You can also find a different gear set for your stock rear and keep everything 6 lug. The diesels had better highway gears, if I remember correctly.

Thanks for the response.. I was doing some reading here about using an Isuzu trooper dana 40.. but I was unclear if that 6 bolt pattern matches the 6 lug up front.. and if the Isuzu dana is direct bolt in... or does it need modification?

If its a huge pain .. I will prob go the s-10 route.. already found a rear end here I can use at the shop... but its got like a big harmonic balancer or something on the yoke.. is that normal.. never seen that before..

Thanks X

I don't know anything about that rear end. The wheel patterns should be the same though.

Alot of the S-10 7.5 and 7.625 axles have the balancer style yoke . Event the super rare 10 bolt 8.5 2wd S-10 axles had them . the balancer yoke can be swapped for a standard style yoke , but be careful you dont over crush the crush sleeve or the pinion bearing will be out soon . Dana 44 from mail jeeps have been swapped in also . They are hard to find now and have a full size Ford truck bolt pattern . I prefer to redrill and fab a 9 inch using drum brakes .

The Isuzu is not a direct bolt in, the pads will need to be moved. It is somewhat wider, and it isn't any stronger than a 7.5 S-10 rear, IMO...

My personal opinion on rear ends is buy your last rear end first.

Craigslist late 70's early 80's Ford F-150 or bronco . Get a 3.50 gear with the posi / limited slip . Have the housing narrowed to correct width , send axle to Moser for respline and 5 x 4.5 small Ford car pattern set in truck and weld perches on . sent rotors to California and have them redrilled to 5 x 4.5 , use die grinder to elongate stud hole to smaller pattern or redrill drums to 5 x 4.5 ...........Done . Even the factory E brake cables snap right in .
