can the stock rear end handle a stock 350 sbc? (question 1)
Yes. Depending on what your purpose is, it may not be ideal. The LUVs tended to be geared really low. I can't remember offhand what the 78 came with, but the 76 manual came with 4.56 gears and the auto had 4.1. If you're planning on driving it much and keep the stock rear, you'll probably want an overdrive transmission.

So whats the cheapest easiest rear end to put in... but then also get all 4 wheels to match.. if s-10 is 5 lug and luv front is 6 lug.. is there a wheel out there that has a 5 and 6 lug bolt patter you guys use? Or what are people doing to get matching wheels... I did see the 5 lug drill out rotors deal sticky... but I would think someone has figured out an easy way to put a better rear end in but get all matching wheels... ( question 2)
Thanks X
The s10 rear is pretty easy. Everything lines up, and most (all?) had 3.73 gears.
I met a guy once who had 5 lugs in the rear and 6 lugs up front. He had bought his wheels from Jeg's. The styles matched, but if you're wanting to carry a spare tire... you have to carry 2.
The easiest method is the S10 rear and the redrill, IMO.
Hotrod80 has a Toyota 5 lug conversion thread (small Ford pattern) but it seems like more trouble than it's worth.
You can also find a different gear set for your stock rear and keep everything 6 lug. The diesels had better highway gears, if I remember correctly.
