first, at the moment I'm currently deployed and in Afghanistan so, needless to say this will be a future project of mine.
But I want to build my wheeler, I've owned them in the past but I'm sad to say I never have felt the pride of building one on my own. My first truck was a somewhat pieced together Chevy LUV that my grandpa sold me and I've loved the vehicle since.
I already know that I want a 350 and 350 turbo trans with a 205 t-case, I've been thinkin on putting Dana 44s in it also, would like to go up 8-10 inches and have anywhere from 38-42s. But the thing I'm hung up on is I'm not too sure if it will all work, and how to go about doin it. Any advice please feel free, but please don't be too hard on me.. I'm new at this and really just wanna do it right.

Partially done project in the classifieds that might be just the ticket. Good luck...

Just wonderin on this btw, will 3 inches of body lift allow the room I'll need for the 350 turbo trans? And also, other than the wheel wells what engine compartment mods will I have to do to fit a 350 in there?

One thing that made a Luv so popular is that a small block will fit right in. There are adapter mounts and headers still available. The emergency brake will have to be moved but you really dont have to mess with the fender wells.

really? I was under the impression that I would need to do some work to fit a small block in there.

Depending on your distributor, you might have to hammer the firewall back just a tad. That's really it.

your doing straight axles right? I was planning to keep my luv 4x4 when I dropped in the 4.3 but the tcase that was on the 700r4 hit the torsion bar so as long as you are getting rid of them you shouldnt have a problem.

a th350 fits in the trans tunnel without modification I think but a small body lift would make things easier to deal with but im not sure about tcase clearance with a 205

The V8 will fit sort of.. The standard front t-bar suspension may give you a little trouble.
Ask on the 4 x 4 section. A body lift might help some with the engine and tranny fit with the cab. The stock Luv 4 cyl engine sits right above the suspension cross link and stuff. The repair book say's you have to pull the engine to change the timing cover to get the oil pan off. The oil pan is only about 1" or 2 " in front. It very tight. I had a factory book and several ones and they all said the same.

I did not put a V8 in mine because the only one I saw was getting off of the freeway. This was early '80's. No internet then for us regular people.

Grandmaster of the "Shade Tree" way.. I can't see the yard for all the cars. Come on down and we will sit on the porch and watch the grass grow.

d44's would work in there pretty nicely
when I was trying to set mine up with a 700r4/np203 there was a casting piece on the 203 that would have hit the tbar under a load.
it looked like it would also be close to the floor of the cab if not touching, so a slight body lift would be handy for clearance. the 205 isn't shaped the same as a 203 so it may clear just fine or may be worse but im not sure. 38-42 is a whole lot of tire!
you saw this right?

I know you said you want to build it yourself but that is just a body/frame so the engine, axles, suspension etc etc would be up to you still and that would save a bit of fab work

Oh yes, I saw that, don't get me wrong, beautiful truck. the only problem I have with buying that is I wont be home for another 7 months and its not exactly starting from scratch like I would like to do. That and my I'm sure my fiancé doesn't much want to deal with a body and frame. I've been watching my hometown craigslist though, just hoping to see one then its as easy as sending my fiancé the money and having her and my little cousin go pick it up. the only frustrating part is everyone that is trying to sell a LUV in that area is asking 2-3k which if I'm just looking for a body and frame is a little much. hopefully I get this all figured out before I make my trip back home lol
