hey guys I have a couple of newbie questions so please be kind. Tried searching but didn't get what i want.

How much power can the stock rear axle handle, if I drop in a small block is a new rear end required or can it just be beefed up?

Does anyone have a picture of a stepside without the fender flares?

If you drive it nice and don't go racing around (yea right, I know) the stock rear end will hold up for quite a while. Most people either do an S:10 rear axle or a ford 9".

I don't know, I haven't done it. I was just repeating what others have said on here. Hopefully someone in the know will chime in here.

Stepside without the fender flares?

Do you mean the box without the fenders mounted on it?

there is a pic of one without and with the fenders near the top of this thread
viewtopic.php?f=33&t=28778

as for the stock rear end I am running a "fairly" built 4.3 in mine and it is doing great. if you aren't running really wide grippy rear tires and jamming the throttle from a stop you will break traction before you break the axle. I have heard the luv axle may be stronger than the 7.5" s10 by a tiny amount (not a proven fact just speculation) main advantage of the s10 rear is that if you choose to go nuts later on you have the parts available to strengthen it, change axle ratio and some posi/lsd options which we have none of unless you find a Isuzu impulse rear center section

and like mytmouz said the s10s are a 5 on 4.75 bolt pattern that most gm rwd cars also use. if your truck is 2wd you can have your front rotors redrilled by chevytoyr1 on this forum to match the s10 rear pattern. here is a link to his thread about it

A member by the name of Michael Van Horn raced his LUV with the stock rear. High 10s in the 1/4 mile if I remember right.

take a look at a picture of a luv rear axle and a ford 9" they are almost identical the luv axle is just a shrunken down copy. also another option most people don't bring up is the Isuzu rodeo rear axle, they are beefier than the luv axle, have disc brakes and a believe an optional limited slip, and they have the same bolt pattern as the stock axle

Having broken plenty, a stock LUV axle is in no way comparable to a 9 inch. I don't remember ever breaking a stock one on street tires, but sticky tires will eventually get them...

oh no I wasn't trying to say it is comparible to a 9" strength wise in any way, just that it is a similar design that someone stuck in a shrinkydink oven. don't remember who mentioned the stock one being possibly stronger than the s10 7.5, don't know if that goes for the slightly bigger I think 7.625 or not either. that is research I need to be doing in the near future as well
