LUV's are basic machines. The engine and trans - they're like a simplified diagram of those you'd find in a modern car.
If you're going to go through the trouble of rebuilding, keep that fact in mind when you hear a quote from a local garage. This project should be relatively straightforward - maybe even fun - for a heavy line mechanic.
That being said, a rebuild is a rebuild, and it is hard to say without seeing the damage. Who knows what state things are in? 25 years is a long time. It very well might be cheaper and less hassle to find a whole new engine/trans setup. I have a stock truck so I can't really speak for the ease or practicality of the many engine swaps documented on this site, but I'm sure some suggestions are inbound...
Getting back on the road will probably set you back 3 grand. Depending on where you live it could be cheaper I suppose? Anyone think that's too low?
