The tank needs to vent someplace. With hot and cold the fuel will expand and contract, the vapors have to go some where,

A vented cap will work but you will smell vapors from it.

Smelling the vapors is ok with me. I think it will clean up the look of the bed...just my personal opinion.

Not that I know what I am doing... When I changed out my diff last year I had the bed off and had to disconnect the vapor tank. I researched it as much as possible and then capped off everything but the gas line to the fuel pump. I wasn't sure but decided to go for it. I haven't had any issues so far. As far as a vented gas cap, mine has an old locking cap and I figured the seal was so old if it needed venting it was good to go.

My v8 blazer was capped when I got it. On a morning when it was cool then warmed considerably, the tank was pretty full and the pressure in the tank pushed fuel through the carb. Fuel was running out the valve covers. I drilled a hole in the cap...

LUVTRKR hit the nail on the head, most of these old caps are worn out enough to vent. My friends shop that does smog sees most of the 70's cars and trucks failing smog checks due to caps not sealing.

Buy a new cap. Spend the five bucks. I did. My fuel economy jumped 1 and 1/2 mpg. It's supposed to be a closed system with the vapors returning back to the tank at the back or into the engine at the front.
