I am the relatively new owner of a 1978 Chevy LUV Mikado. My son actually bought the LUV as a project truck (he has a 2012 Dodge Ram that is already impressive), but decided it was too small for him to drive comfortably. I bought the truck from him and have been using it as a daily driver for the past month. The truck supposedly has 70,000 original miles, but it certainly needs some TLC in any case.

The latest development has been the discovery that the gas tank is leaking. The top is dry, but the entire bottom half is wet when I fill the tank. (Needless to say, I am keeping it below half for now.) It is not a steady run from anywhere, but more of a seep. It appears that the tank is leaking from the seam.

I have searched quite a bit on this forum about the gas tank (I found this site when I first bought the truck and have learned a lot here already). So far I have been unable to find a replacement tank anywhere online. My question for you veteran LUV truck owners: is it possible to find a replacement tank or do I need to resort to a custom solution? I have considered a bed-mount tank if I need to get into custom solutions, but I am also not finding much in the way of tanks for gasoline. Alternately, has anyone had any success having a tank repaired/relined when it is leaking from the seam? I would prefer to just replace the tank as this is my daily driver, but I realize it may not be an option.

Thanks in advance for any input of advice. This is the first thing I have run into for this truck that I cannot find - at least within a few days.

If it is actually the seam, and not a rusted out place, a good radiator shop should be able to fix it for you, and then do the inside sealer job for you as well...

Thanks! I will look at it a little closer then see if I can find somewhere local to do the work.
