I have a 1979 chevy luv Mikado the voltage regulator has gone bad. so my question is it best to replace the alternator with a built in voltage regulator or just replace the voltage regulator? the voltage regulator is very pricy and about the same cost as a alternator with the regulator built in it. and what is the correct way to run the new wires for the alternator with reg built in. or does anyone no of a cheap place to buy voltage regulator. thanks for help

I would stay with the stock regulator just to simplify everything. The wiring is already there and the regulator also controls the electric fuel pump operation. No mods needed. My thoughts.

I would keep it stock. I see NAPA has 2 regulators, one for $60 and one for $35. I did modify my stock wiring harness to accept a GM alternator with a internal regulator, not a big deal but then you need to decide what to do with the fuel pump wiring like the above reply has mentioned. Again, if the truck is stock I would buy the replacement regulator, since my truck is modified from the front to back I went with the bigger amp GM alternator and did a separate circuit for the fuel pump.
