I just bought a 78 chevy luv, It is an Auto trans the truck runs and drives but needs to be shifted into nuetral while stopped at stop lights etc. If shifted into drive it will lurch forward and stall out.

Any ideas, Torque converter? if so part number?
Does it have a torque converter solenoid switch?
\
I ordered a automotive manual for it but am waiting for it to get here.

any help will be appreciated! :ebiggrin :ebiggrin :ebiggrin :ebiggrin

Sounds like a torque converter clutch problem. However--no such thing on a stock luv transmission. Do you know what transmission you have? Maybe someone installed a later transmission. Is the engine a stock luv 1.8?

thank you for the reply, it is a 2wd automatic,
the engine is marked G180
I think the transmissions is stock, but I'm not sure. included are pictures

the transmission had a metal tag on the back that was stamped (360) not sure of relevance, maybe a rebuild tag.

UPDATE:

So I think the truck had been sitting for years when the guy I bought it from picked it up. I think the torque converter might have been seized from sitting. I bought 2 in 1 transmission repair in a bottle and put the half quart in, shifted it in gear and fixed! think all it needed was a good lube.

went out the next morning and had the same problem.... the bottle said it could work instantly or take up to 100 miles to start working, we will see... It did work for an evenings worth of driving though.
