hello I am new to this site. I have a problem with my '80 LUV. Everytime I try to start it, my resistor bypass relay clicks. It was starting and running fine before. Can anyone help? Thanks for reading this.

Welcome to the site. If I could help, I certainly would. I know more about diesels than gas trucks.

But here's a suggestion that might help you GET help: Use a descriptive Subject line. Half the new topics on any given forum are for help (I just made up that statistic, but you get the point, I hope). With the right Subject line, it might get the right kind of attention. I suggest:
"Starting problem, '80 LUV"
or something similar.

Jack

Hello I am in search of help. Just today my truck began having issues starting. I looked through the wiring diagrams on this site to figure out what was clicking, and it turns out to be my resistor bypass relay. Can someone help me figure out what my problem is? Thanks.

Josh

Try replacing it. Not much info to go on here. Does it start when you let off the key?

Are you sure it's not the solenoid on the starter that's clicking? My LUV sometimes takes 4 or 5 clicks before the starter engages, I need to take clean & lube the solenoid 7 it will work fine again.

Its not the solenoid that's clicking, I removed the cover for a few relays next to my starter, and found out which one is clicking, I then proceeded to look at the wiring diagram provided by this site for the '80 LUV its says its the resistor bypass relay. I am in the process of locating the starter now. No ones seems to carry the starter or the solenoid here.

Oh and one more thing, it doesn't start when I let off the key either.

They by pass relay just adds full battery power to the coil while cranking. Does the truck turn over, does it try to start? Please give us the full story, saying its hard to start does not tell us enough to help.

If the relay is clicking then it is probably working fine. I would look down the circuit for another problem. You will of course need a volt meter or a test light. If you can read the schematic then I'm sure that you can fix it if you have a meter or light. My 2 cents worth.

Yeah I'm a bit confused here as well. Does the starter turn the motor over at all? If it does not and just the bypass relay clicks then I would say the relay is fine but the starter is bad. If you get no loud click from the starter area then it is likely the solenoid on the starter. It is usually easiest to just replace the starter/solenoid together as they usually come as a complete unit. You should also check all the wiring to the starter. One small wire broke off or loose would cause it not to turn over.

If it is spinning the motor over then you have other issues at work.

Yes and don't forget that troublesome clutch switch. It is in the circuit to the starter.

Take your meter or test light and have someone turn the key to start. I’m assuming that the starter is not turning as you weren’t real clear on your description of the problem. Check the relay and see:
1. if you have control power to the relay
2. if you have incoming power to the relay
3. if you have outgoing power to the relay
If you have power at all 3 test points then the relay is good and you need to look somewhere else. If not then post the results of this test.
I suspect that you will find the relay is good.
