So I noticed when I had my wheels off to paint, that I have a small leak from the rear end. Couple questions about this. It is leaking out where the driveshaft goes in, so what part would I need to replace to keep this from leaking? Second, which one is the fill hole?

I see the one on the back facing the camera, but it isn't even halfway up..is that all the fluid it holds? Or is it that little tube on the top slightly off to the right side? Really for now the leak is small enough I can live with it, just want to make sure the rear end doesn't run dry.

and last, what do you guys run for gear oil in these? I'm sure there is a lot I can use, just seeing if anyone has preferences?

thanks!

The bolt on the back is the fill hole. You can only fill it that that high. The bottom one is the drain plug. The tube is the air vent. The leak is most likely your pinion seal. Those should still be available. I just ordered one for my Isuzu, because it's leaking. I use 75w90 gear lube in mine.

Yes, you need to make sure it doesn't run dry.

Check that vent tube, make sure it is not blocked, a blockage can cause pressure from heat to build up & force lube past a seal, either the pinion seal or an axle seal. The leak may stop after clearing a blockage.
If you have to replace the pinion seal it is a Timken #474133. They can be tricky to replace since you have to be careful not to torque the pinion nut so tight you collapse the crush sleeve too much.

Thanks guys! I will check that vent tube for blockage and get the rear end filled up as much as I can. I just figured it would hold more than about halfway full of fluid, so I wanted to double check. Is there a specific torque for that pinon nut? I didn't look a whole lot but I didn't even see from a glance how I would get the old one out yet so I need to do some more looking.

I'm thinking as long as I keep it filled this is probably going to wait a bit for repair. I had just gotten the carb back on and tuned to where she was running pretty good...then I got home and it was pissing coolant off the back of the motor all over the tranny and stuff...will be a new topic for me to start but long story short she may not be driving around for a little while till I figure that out.

Again thou, thanks for the help! This site has already been very useful
