The only thing I've ever done was get crud clogging up the jets on a truck that had been sitting for many years and had crud/bugs in the tank. That was obvious though, like barely running obvious.
If you did any damage it was likely not the carb. Clean cap/rotor contacts, clean/regap points, check compression maybe for valve issues? I don't know what the trouble is exactly, but I'd say the carb is not it.
