So, a few months back, my truck's timing chain decided it didn't like being there anymore. However, before we figured out that was the issue, we replaced the starter, the battery, the battery connectors, cleaned all the grounds, replaced the points, rotator and distributor cap, the fuel filter, a new ignition coil, and rebuilt the carburetor. Since we discovered it was the timing chain (which did not snap or destroy the engine), we have replaced practically all the timing components and re-assembled the engine, cleaned out the oil pan, changed the oil and did a valve adjustment while we were at it. After four long months, the truck will crank, but it doesn't catch! We are really sure we have the timing right as it's set to #4. However, we closed off all the vacuum lines and poured gasoline straight into the carb and it just backfires. Ay ideas? This has been every Sunday for four months, and I'm finally about to admit defeat and call an auto shop! Any last ideas? Thanks in advance.

Sounds like you have the firing order off. The way the manual has for the assembly of the timing chain has it timing to number 4 cylinder. Several times a year we at this site get this problem. Best I can tell you is pull the valve cover, get number 1 to tdc and work from there.

I agree. Pull the valve cover, set crank to TDC. If #1 cylinder valves are closed the distributor rotor should point to #1 wire. If #4 valves are closed rotor should point to #4. Then it's just 1-3-4-2 counter clockwize.
