 Post subject: 2 post starter wiring?

I have an aftermarket wiring harness on my 80 chevy luv 4x4 . I thought I had it wired correctly but but when i put the negative battery cable on the battery post the truck started trying to turn over .On a typical starter how would the wiring go such as which wire to which post . Thanks for the help .

3 terminals on the solenoid. One shunted to the starter. The other larger one has the cable directly from the battery. The small one connects to the start circuit, hot with key in start.
