I bought this little black 4x4 beauty for a few hundred. it had a "detonated" timing chain.. as in it kinda exploded when it broke. I got all the parts and put it all back together, having never worked on one of these trucks, it seemed fairly simple..
after the front of the motor was back together, it wouldnt start. compression is 150,95,115,and 150. all hold psi well. justs backfires or pops out of the carb, depending on the distributor location..
bet i have it one tooth off, huh...
CAN I CHANGE ONE TOOTH WITH OUT PULLING THE T/C COVER..??
thanks!!
Jonny

did you line up all of the timing marks on the gears, chain and such before you put it together? 95 and 115 are awfully low 8O not so much that it wouldnt run tho so thats not going to be the problem.. it sounds like you are getting the spark at the wrong time. have you had one of the always wonderful carb fireballs? i almost lost an eyebrow to one

No expert on stockers, but several threads on here all point to it timing off #4 instead of #1. Might want to check that...

Common mistake. Luvs are set up with #4 instead of the usual #1. You can't simply reposition the distributor but the fix is simple---just change the wire position in the distributor cap.

Yup. Swap #1 for #4, and swap #2 for #3.

Sometimes the wire for the oil light needs to be cleaned with a wire brush. You may have knocked it off also.
