Hello all,
I recently had a rebuilt 1.8L put into my '79 4x4 (along with new clutch and flywheel)
The truck runs great except when it's shut off and cools down I lose about 2oz of coolant from the block/radiator region.

Any ideas? I'm thinking it might be a faultily installed gasket but I would prefer to have some sort of idea before I just go hog-wild with the tools trying to diagnose the problem.

Thanks in advance for any help folks!

You can get a loaner coolant pressure tester from Auto Zone and try that first...

Those are two completely different areas. The radiator could be leaking, hoses, overflow hose and so forth. The block could have a bad head gasket, water pump, where the hoses connect to the pump and thermostat housing could be leaking...need to check where the leak is coming from before you start wrenching.

I should have been more specific, obviously. Where the leak collected into a drip was at the back end of the block near the transmission NOT the radiator. That was a brain fart. I haven't yet located where the leak originated, although the list you drew up for me was very helpful and I will start there.

I was just curious if anyone had any ideas why it didn't leak when it was hot or cold, only when it was in the process of cooling down from hot to cold.

Thanks for all the help!

could be something wasnt quite torqued down tight enough so during cooling when the metal retracts slightly there may be a small gap left? i would run it until its warm shut it down and spend a little while under the hood with a light and see if it is coming out of the head/gasket, around a manifold gasket or from one of the hoses tucked underneath... i know the one under the intake is kind of a pain to get to or see... is the leak on the passenger or driver side?
