Hi there.

When I bought my '80 LUV, the needle would always hang out at the 3/4 of the way hot mark, but never got any higher than that. I had an oil leak fixed and after that it started showing all the way hot, all the time. I took it to a mechanic and they changed out the fan assembly and when I picked it up they told me that it's reading hotter than it actually is.

It's still showing all the way hot. It is not steaming. I bought an infrared thermometer. I'm not sure where I am supposed to point it or what is a safe temperature? If it's not really overheating I'll try to buy a new gauge, but if it is I need to fix the overheating issue. I would rather not take it back to the shop.

Thank you!

The manual tells you how to take an Ohm reading with a multimeter on the temp sensor cold and hot. I can't remember what the range is off the top of my head. This will at least tell you if your sensor is good or bad. I don't think I've ever heard of a temp gauge going bad on a Luv.

You would want to point the infrared gauge at the thermostat housing and or the radiator. I would guess when the truck is fully warmed up it would read up around 170.

Take a reading off the lower radiator hose after it is warmed up. The rubber hose will read closer to the actual water temp than any metal part you take a reading of...

A quick check of the gauge: Key on, disconnect the wire from the sending unit, gauge should read cold. Ground the disconnected wire, gauge should read max hot. This means the dash gauge is ok.

Top radiator hose, various locations on the engine block, thermostat location, reading in the 180-230 range.

Spark plugs 280 (i don't know, we were pointing it everywhere), lower radiator hose 145.

Does this sound right/okay?

Sounds ok. Try the "quick check of the gauge" tip...
