I'll bet this is something simple, and related to the filter change. I think you're opening the wrong banjo fitting. There's a bleeder screw on one of the banjo fittings on the pump. Open that, and you should be able to use the plunger to bleed it. However, if you have an air leak at the filter, you'll continue to have trouble. There are a few problems that can happen when changing a filter:
- Cracked fuel line - The flexible lines get brittle, and it only takes a small crack to allow air in. You might want to cut about 1/2" off the inlet side and outlet side, as well as where it connects to the pump, if you have enough slack.[
- Water-in-fuel sensor leak - The sensor on the bottom of the filter has a large O-ring. It can[ get twisted when installing the sensor onto the new filter. If it does, you may not get a good seal. I would inspect that closely.
- Purge valve leak - The '81-'82 filter assemblies are different from mine, so I'm not as familiar with the design. If you have a plastic petcock for draining water from the filter, and if you've opened it, you can get the little O-ring crooked and it won't seal. This happened to me after a filter change.
I would NOT do anything drastic until ruling out all sources of air intrusion. That's the most common problem with the injection system.
