Evening,

I am Jamie from Portland OR. Got a LUV 81 diesel 4x4 2 months ago so far replaced alternator, battery fuel filter and flushed coolant + oil change. Got a couple flats 3 already. towed twice in the same day when I was heading back home. Replaced rear brakes and installed a high flow intake. The intake makes a lot of noise but don't see much improvement going up hills. Wanted to dyno it before and after but would cost 100 so I'll pass. It is lifted on 31/ 15/ 8.5 and slow estimating it tops at 65 on a long stretch of highway but getting close to 35mpg hauling junk make it alright. Removed the brush guard as it isn't doing anything the way I drive.

So far it hasn't been bad at all but Friday I replaced fuel filter ran alright. Tried to start Sat and it idled very roughly no response from pedal and would die. Worked on it and it quit starting altogether, the starter sounds good but engine won't cough at all.
Today again it won't cough- no idling. Cracked injectors at cylinders and moist but I don't think there is any fuel coming up. Pulled the glow plugs and wire brushed them even though I doubt that had much to do with this. They were dry and had a light carbon build up. Using a hand vacuum I filled the filter up, cracked injectors, all four, 2, 1 cranked each time for about 7-10 seconds. Cracked line at injection pump. Again cranked 7 seconds and nothing. Tightened back up. Tried a little wd40 in intake. Used that for my 6.2 Chevy and it worked but nothing here.

I believe it is an airlock because it ran fine and started up with little trouble until I just changed the fuel filter. I don't want to pull the IP out to have it serviced but maybe I will. Im getting a new water pump and timing belt as I don't know the history of LUV- better safe than sorry here. Any body know how to fix this air lock if it is such or how to diagnose the IP?
That is about all I can tell you of the history. I heard somewhere there is a chance it could be the antidieseling solenoid or something of that nature, but again I had it coughing white smoke yesterday and today it made one plume after maybe 15 times cranking it. Thank you. One last thing- where can I get rubber bushings for the sway bar on the end that isn't connected to the frame?

Again here labor day Monday, Fuel appears drawn into IP. I loosened up banjo fitting where fuel enters from filter and it did show some wetness though this doesn't seem enough in my observation. Cracked all cylinder nozzles as well as banjo fitting and only the #2 appeared wetted- 2nd closest to radiator. I cranked 15secs closed all fittings, used a brake bleeder pump attached to outlet side of filter to ensure filter was filled up and reattached hose to banjo fitting. My starter is good again, wire brushed the contacts on the plunger and on the 2 copper contacts. I have been looking all over the google for proper way to bleed air from system but haven't seen a good step by step approach. I don't want to buy an electric inline pump because it ran without one fine. I saw a bit on pulling suction through the return line- did try it as well.

Summary- fuel is coming out of #2 nozzle nothing else observed. Recharging battery now and will crank again.
I know it takes crank time to bleed from owning a chevy 6.2 previously but thought I surpassed that cranking time with this LUV. Have a good weekend I rather be fishing though I ll just end up cranking one out at my folks house until this truck gets going again.

I'll bet this is something simple, and related to the filter change. I think you're opening the wrong banjo fitting. There's a bleeder screw on one of the banjo fittings on the pump. Open that, and you should be able to use the plunger to bleed it. However, if you have an air leak at the filter, you'll continue to have trouble. There are a few problems that can happen when changing a filter:

  • Cracked fuel line - The flexible lines get brittle, and it only takes a small crack to allow air in. You might want to cut about 1/2" off the inlet side and outlet side, as well as where it connects to the pump, if you have enough slack.[
  • Water-in-fuel sensor leak - The sensor on the bottom of the filter has a large O-ring. It can[ get twisted when installing the sensor onto the new filter. If it does, you may not get a good seal. I would inspect that closely.
  • Purge valve leak - The '81-'82 filter assemblies are different from mine, so I'm not as familiar with the design. If you have a plastic petcock for draining water from the filter, and if you've opened it, you can get the little O-ring crooked and it won't seal. This happened to me after a filter change.

I would NOT do anything drastic until ruling out all sources of air intrusion. That's the most common problem with the injection system.

See This article for some great troubleshooting info.
