My truck ran great before I moved. I towed it aprox 80 miles. When I tried to put it into reverse it wouldn't start when in gear, but would in neutral. After a few attempts I managed to get it into gear, and back it off, but it took an insane amount of strength to put into gear. After I parked it and tried to start it later same thing happened. Started in Neutral, but when I attmpted to start it in gear it would turn over and lurch forward a bit, and die immediately. I am installing a new starter today, but was wondering if that sounds like it might be an issue with the pressure plate or with the flywheel. Also when the truck is off I can shift gears with no more effort then usual. Thanks for your help.

Sounds like a clutch problem, make sure its got the full range of motion at the trans while someone is pushing and releasing the pedal.

I agree. It's a clutch adjustment issue. Think about it. If it starts in neutral, the starter works. It's not the starter.
Is it a cable or hydraulic clutch?

Agreed. Also, if it's a hydraulic clutch, it may just need fluid in the reservoir. However, if it needs fluid you may have a leak somewhere.

After I tried to start it a few times in gear the starter completely died. It is a hydraulic clutch. I'm reading the repair manual, and it says to use brake fluid for the clutch. Does that sound right? I'm an amateur mechanic, only done basics, starter, belts etc. never done clutch or transmission repairs myself. Where do I put the fluid for the clutch? Is there a cap for the reservoir somewhere? Thanks for all your help.

What year is the truck? Earlier years have hydraulic, later years have a cable.

Truck is a 79. could my master cylinder be bad? I tried to push the truck in gear and couldn't get it to budge. Is the clutch not disengaging?

According to this thread viewtopic.php?f=5&t=2083 your truck has a cable linkage to the clutch. It sounds like the clutch is not disenganging, as everyone has said. Hopefully it's as simple as adjusting the cable.
