I agree with Iluvit about the nature of first-owner cars. I'm a lot like you, I'm comfortable wrenching on cars and consider my knowledge of automobiles to be above average but I'm certainly no professional mechanic. If you really like the truck, and it gets your seal of approval, I suggest taking it to a mechanic for a pre-purchase inspection; they'll be able to diagnose problems you don't have the equipment/know how to spot. I've been burned in the past on vehicles that appeared to be a great deal and turned out to be lemons a couple of months down the line. If for nothing else the peace of mind is worth the $100 bucks you'll spend, and it could potentially save you thousands.
