Heater only works on Defrost. ( as in when I turn it to heater it blows cold air out the vents.) Also , water is leaking in from the vents under the dashboard I believe from the cowl in the front. Where is the water supposed to drain from the cowl. I live in an apartment so I cant spend three days looking for the problems I need to know how to solve them quickstat.

thanks for all the luvly help :D

Are you sure the water coming in is not coolant from the heater core?

On the vent thing, look around where the control knobs' cables run from the knob to the doors they move. Make sure all is hooked up.

It only leaks when it rains? so i dont think its the heater core. I believe the water that gets in the cowl is supposed to drain out the inside of the front fenders but I think my drains are plugged and water is building up in there until it has enough to get over the guard to the vents. both sides though?? Im pretty lost and dont want to pull my fenders.

My '76 used to leak water like you described. I never could figure out exactly how to fix it, although I traced it to the two down vents under the dash that open with the little "V" knob.

Come to think of it, my 4X4 floor gets wet when it rains also.
As far as heat, make sure when you put the knob to "hot", that the valve under the hood, on the fire wall is opening. It could be not hooked up, clogged, or the valve is internally broken, maybe.

my switching valve for the heater was leaking coolant so i just re routed the hose to always run through the heater core and eliminated the valve for the time being.

Im getting heat through the defroster not through to the floor and dash vents (only when on defrost and set to hot) when set to any other settings it always blows cold air out.

I think on vent you will only get cool air, never hot. Hot will only come through the floor or defroster vents. Sounds like an air diverter door problem to me.

Hey mazeman02, what part of NW Wash. do you live? My passenger side keeps filling with water when it rains and I traced the problem to a bad spot on my windshield seal. As for the hot air, I agree with Rondog that hot air won't blow through vents, just defrost and bottom.

I was born and raised in Skagit county. Sedro-Woolley or the ass-hole as i like to call it. I figured where the leak is comming from just need to weld up a rust spot. As for the heater im not sure what to do still even though you guys are trying to explain still sounds nothing like a chilton/haynes haha. Im just a kid this is my first luv and I have done it right so far.

When you move the knob for "vent heater defroster", you are moving a door inside the heater box under the dash. My guess is it is not sealing off well enough, or not moving at all the direct the air to the floor for the heater.

Just so I'm understanding you clearly..... on defrost, you get air at the top of the dash, and on vent you get air out the vents to your face, but on heater, you do not get any air, hot or cold, out the bottom of the dash to your feet?

OK. I just went out and played with my truck. The way it should be.... temp set on hot, hot air out on def, and heat, but cool air on vent.

My guess is, there is a door in the air box that diverts the air around the heater core, rather than through it, when on the vent setting.
I think on yours, that door is not moving when you switch from vent to heat, and then it does move when you go to def.
