Is this possible? I have a friend who has a yard full of luv projects and has done many projects he says you can use any sbc header with a little cut and luv exhaust manifold gaskets bolts right on. Anyone heard of this or have pics as he has none with the 1.8L anymore?

also I tried finding a thread on this with no luck.

Thanks,
Jeff

it is possible
depending on your level of fabrication skill and the tools you have at your disposal.
im not sure if the bolt patterns are the same or close enough to modify. i dont have the two sittign in front of my to compare but theoretically you would be able to modify if to fit. it may require you to make a new flange. look into it before you commit to it for sure but if it works let me know for sure! that would help me with my header idea

seems like an easy cost effective way to gain a little power. My father has loads of headers sitting around ha.

most of them skipped over that step and bought a pace setter header that would bolt up out of the box.
i have never done the swap myself but i was considering using the tubing from a used sbc header, cutting it, re bending it and using it for a turbo header and i am good with problems like this so lemme try and give ya a push in the right direction and lemme know if there is anything specific u need to know.

basically it is going to be a P.I.T.A to do it properly.
you will have to cut the SBC header tubes from the flange and make a new mounting flange that will bolt up to the G180 block [for the time being leave the collector at the other end of the header] (i do NOT recommend trying to cut the stock manifold and welding the tubes to it... welding to cast material doesnt turn out well.

if you have the tools and know-how you can make 3 flange plates (1/4-3/8" thickness). one for each of the outer exhaust ports and one for the 2 middle ones. for best results i would recommend heading to the part store and grabbing a new set of exhaust gaskets and using them as a template for your new flanges... once you have made yourself some exhaust flanges you will need to bore holes for the head studs so the flange can bolt to the block and then cut out the exhaust ports...

if you STILL wanna do this...
the next step will be bolting the flanges up to your engine block & taking the sbc header tubes and tack welding them in place on the flanges and checking everything for correct fit.
if you did everything correctly, everything lines up and there are no clearance issues go ahead and finish welding each tube to its flange, since few of us are lucky enough to get it perfect firs ttry there may be a bit of grinding and bending work to make it perfect.. check for any leaks or inproper welds with the heat a header has to handle you want to be sure it is done right.

pretty much all that must be done to make it work is you need to make it possible for each header tube to line up with an exhaust port and have it bolt up correctly (it sounds sooo simple in theory doesnt it??) from there what u do with your exhaust system is up to you. if you do it the way i just described it will work out just fine. just make sure you take your time, measure 3x cut and weld once all those witty little life lessons....

feel free to PM me if you have any more questions about how to set it up and make it work.
