i'm having trouble identifying the year for my g180 block. the cast number is 803 13; sp-2e. the luv chassis is a 1980, but this block does not match my shop manual for model years 1972-81. i really think its a later block because it doesn't conform to the shop manual in the sense that there is no camshaft thrust plate, no cam carrier front cover, no layshaft or jackshaft, no secondary timing gear or secondary chain tensioner or secondary chain. just a crank, cam, one chain, and one sprocket a piece. it seems obvious that its not the original block that came with the truck.

There are two forms of G180. The 72-75 and the 76-82+ What you describe with the two chains, jack shaft, lay shaft, and such is the earlier form. The intake and exhaust are on the same side of the head, drivers side.

The 76 and newer trucks came with a new design, but the same G180 designation on the motor. The head is a cross flow design, intake on right exhaust on left (as viewed from the driver seat) and a single timing chain from crank to cam. They area completely different designs.

What shop manual are you looking at? If it is a Haynes, Clymer, or Chiltons they have different sections for the different engine styles. The early style 72-75 is also called "Series 1-4" and the style it you have is the "Series 5-12" Your 1980 truck would be called a series 10.

The '76-on complete engine designation is G180Z & is the stock engine in a '80 LUV.
A Factory Service Manual is year-specific and THE recommended source for repair information, the generic manuals try to cover too much & quite often are incorrect or incomplete.

The factory service manual for your specific series is optimal but I have to say the LUV Haynes/Clymer/Chiltons manuals are better than most of those brand's generic manuals. The pictures in them are largely the same exact ones taken from the factory books. The Isuzu Trooper Haynes manual I have is much less helpful as it covers too many models and none very well.

If you do go shopping for a 1980 series 10 factory shop manual you can go with the series 9 if that is all that is available, very little changed from 79 to 80. Series 5-8 would also cover engine and most of the drivetrain except 4x4. I have been able to find them fairly cheap on eBay, there are several series 10s on there right now when I searched for "chevy luv shop manual" priced $15 and under.

I picked up one for each series and the Parts manual. Just so I could have a complete set.
