Just bought a 80 luv...crank and starts first try but smokes very very badly. Very thick smoke...first thought was a head gasket but no oil in water...what else would cause thick smoke...smoke looks grey but has a white tint...so thick hard to tell I don't leave it running very long due to smoke....thanks for your help

Still could be head gasket, maybe bad rings, intake gasket could let coolant into the cylinders also.

This might help

Sounds like the head gasket is blown allowing water in the cylinders. Do a compression test or a leakdown test.

If the head gasket blew to allow coolant in the cylinders you won't find coolant in the pan. Oil in the intake is most likely blow by.

A properly done rebuild of the lower engine, while the top end is in the machine shop...

Replaced intake gasket after finding it missing pieces..replaced the egr...was missing gasket and had oil all over it...what are my chances that it was just an intake problem and not the head

It is really hard telling, especially without a compression test before the head was pulled. There is no sure way to tell if the head gasket was bad once the head is off. (unless it is obvious looking at the gasket) Intake gaskets can leak so it is possible. However, with the tendency of these trucks to have head gasket and head crack problems that seems more likely. My 79 had a tiny hairline crack near the #2 exhaust valve seat that made it blow massive amounts of steam. The head gasket actually looked fine.

Thanks for all the help...put everything back together and now I got a new problem...carburetor started first try but then just revved up on its own and wouldn't shut off...ended up running on its own till it burned all the gass out of the float chamber.
