Prepare to be disappointed is the best I can come up with... Seriously, a cam, header, carb upgrade will be your best bet, as with most any engine. Even if you double the stock hp though, you aren't making very much over...

yeah he's right.. i think these things produce 70 some hp stock.. go for a weber carb, electronic dizzy, and pacesetter headers.

I would just go and drop a v6 or v8 in it. the most i have seen was like 115 out of one and he had to drop alot of cash in it to get it there. offy intake webber carb new cam ( reground) pace header plus head work and he still said it was not worth it so he sold the motor and went v6 3800 if i remember right and injected with headers he pushs like 270hp

I have basically all of the above mods, cam, head ,exhaust, coil ,elect ignition, header, weber and its still by no means fast. However my cam grind is pretty aggressive and my exhaust pretty straight through,so it sounds cool and a lowered 36 year old truck doing 80 mph feels like you are going a lot faster than than you actually are which isnt all bad if you think about it

i agree.. i have dropped way too much money into my 1.8 and am not close to satisfied with it yet.. so i bought a 4.3 v6
if your looking to keep it reliable for around town with good mileage keep the 1.8 but your going to need more cubes or some boost to make it much faster...

I rebuilt mine when I was in high school. Complete rebuild and I added a Weber and had the engine balanced. MAJOR difference with the balance job and the Weber was great.
