I have a 1980 Chevy LUV 4x4 1.8 litre 2 barrel carb. It had been sitting for a long time, not sure how long. It would start and run but it was running very rough and would not idle. I put in new plugs and a carb kit and now it won't start. I was told it might be the ballast resistor so i replaced it and it still won't start. I also cleaned all the electrical connectors i could find and it still won't start. If anyone has any idea what is wrong with this thing i sure would appreciate any help i can get.

did you drain out the old gas and flush out the fuel system already?
mine had been sitting a long time when i got it and i had to pump all the gas out of the tank cycle some new gas in and run that cycle a few times till i got clean gas coming out.

I had this problem on my truck. I checked fuel pressure on the rail and found it to be low -- sometimes. If I can actually get it started for more than a second or two, the pressure comes up to normal but getting fuel to the engine to get it going has been a challenge.

Check that the points are opening in the distributor. My 1980 is notorious for going through 2 sets of points per year.

...And if it does end up being the points, do yourself a huge favor and install the idiot-proof and all-wonderful pertronix ignition that everyone swears by on here, and be done with points once and for all.
Single best improvement I've made to my truck, hands down.
I saw an Immediate difference in performance, and I haven't had to do so much as think about my distributor since.
