my truck started cutting out going up hills and cruising over about 35mph. I've installed a new fuel filter, fuel pump, plugs, wires, dist. cap and rotor, and replaced my points with the pertronix ignitor but it's still being a dickhead. any ideas where to go from here?

Cutting out going up hill usually means the fuel pump. I wouldn't think it would work like that, but have you redone the fuse box? LUV's have a weak link in the electrical system, the fusebox. The terminals the wires connect are riveted to the fuse holders. A little age and corrosion, and you get electrical intermittents. I solved mine by taking it apart and soldering the joints. Others have cleaned it with lemon juice, and others a new fuse box.

It does backfire periodically.

Alright, after all the work and new parts I'm still having this issue. I have the Weber on and idling steadily at 900rpm. It runs well until I hit a hill and then it cuts out. When I pop the hood my FPR is reading 0psi and the secondary fuel filter I put between the fpr and carb is empty. The fuel pump continues to click as if it's operating normally and the motor will still idle as long as I don't give it any throttle. When I reach under the car and shake the pump/line gas will typically start to flow again. The pump (Bosch) has maybe 30 miles on it. Is the pump faulty even though it sounds like its working? Could the second fuel filter be causing any problems? I just want this headache to function as an automobile again rather than a lawn ornament.

Drop the tank & check for a partially clogged fuel pickup screen- and what caused it. You may have a very rusty fuel tank, possibly condensation in the tank bottom.
Also make sure you have a filter between the tank and the fuel pump, electric pumps do not like dirty fuel.

I was having the same problem with my 76.

Fuel pump?

Just went thru E-dizzy w/ new cap/rotor, wires, MSD 6al & blaster 2 coil, 32/36 w/ return line connected, new alt, VR, batt, fues box cleaning, E-fan pushing, water pump, hoses, stat, dropped pan to check oil pump and timing(rods also while I was there), valve adj., emission removed..., and it was still bogging out when throttle was punched an after 37mph under load. I could ease into the throttle and it would go, but floored or over 40mph bog out... , turns out the fuel pump that was pumping, wasn't pumping enough..., got a old e-pump off of a clean luv at pick a part.

Swapped pumps an all my problems went away. It was nice to have all my upgrades kick in at once..., 70-75 on freeway with no problems.

Thanks for the tips, I'll take the tank out and have a look. It runs so smooth when it works I can't wait to actually enjoy driving it.

How many gph should I look for in a pump?
