Dropped by a local truck scale today and weighed both trucks. This was a truck scale so the resolution is only +/- 20 lbs., but you'll get the idea. Both are with no driver.

First is the bone stock 75, 4-wheel drum, no rear bumper, 1/4 tank of gas, no stereo at all.

Next is the 76, Chevy 350, iron block, iron heads, TH400 trans, Ford 9" rear, 16 gal fuel cell, no front bumper, no rear bumper, full tank of gas. This truck also has about 40 lbs. worth of stereo amps under the seats that needs to come out.

...and since I had the camera in the truck I switched it into video mode for the ride home with the 76.

In the first video I had a hard time driving and filming so I had to ease into it to keep it straight. You'll hear that I don't floor it until 3rd gear.

Ben, that time slip database on GCR got you wondering exactly what those trucks weighed, didn't it?

The V8 has two 3" 2-chamber flowmasters on it, 3" tubes all the way that are dumped right before the rear axle. I love the sound. It's really too loud for the street. It just sounds so angry when you get on that I can't bring myself to tone it down.

This thread was inspired by another thread on here that was asking the difference in weight between a stock LUV and a V8 LUV. However, I updated the info at GCR to the correct figure. Of course, with me in the truck, my estimate of 3100 wasn't too far off.

With the radials, the truck spins the tires through all of 1st and most of 2nd. If you listend close, towards the end of 2nd gear you can hear it hook up and then I floor it finally. With some creative driving you can keep it under control. It was also starting to drizzle a bit, which wasn't helping things. LOL

I'd like to take a better video at some point, preferrably with my wife or someone else holding the camera, so I can drive it harder. I'd also like to throw the slicks on it, and film a pass with those on so you guys can see the difference. Night and day!

well if bens stocker 2wd is at 2400, then, your truck with the 4x4 gear should be about 2700. the front axle assembly is about 200lbs and the transfercase and extra driveline is prolly another 100lbs. and the you prolly gotta figure in the bigger/ heavier tires. so all in all you probably at about 2800.

I did the same the other night with my 77 2WD
stock motor, 3/4 tank of gas, about 40-50 pounds of tools, no cargo

Came up at 2900 with me in it, 2750 without.

Maybe I have more crap in there than I thought... I suppose the waterlogged carpet could be adding some poundage too, damn windshield gasket. I do have a cargo mat in it made from a large industrial conveyor belt, could be another 50 there I suppose. Add a bumper, tools, tire chains, bed mat, and a half tank more gas and I guess it could add up to 350 more pounds, 75 to 77 motor differences probably make up any difference. You carrying a spare on either of those Ben?

Curb weight is how much it weighs, GVWR is it plus max cargo load. Your truck would also weigh in heavy with that canopy on the back.

So basically the difference in weight from a 4 banger to two 4 bangers (V8)and the drive train mods. is about 400lbs.
I would have expected a lot more weight in the V8 truck. Interesting.
Now I have to go see the vids. 8)

Cool vids Ben. I might have to get a V8 Luv some day.
Back in high school my buddies brother had one. It was fun.
You know, looking back on it as a 39 year old with teenage kids, 17 year olds should not have access to stuff like that. We are lucky to be alive. 8)

But I'd do it again. :D

My Dad always says, : Old enough to know better, but young enough to try it again."
