Hey all, I've been lurking here as a guest for a few weeks. Since I just picked up a little '79 LUV 4x4 off ebay from an awsome guy north of Allentown, I thought I'd introduce myself & throw a couple questions out there. (I have to say 'little' because my last daily driver is an '85 Chevy Caprice wagon I'm selling now. The LUV is 6' shorter than the wagon!)

I was blown away by the gas milage on the way home. 28mpg in 2-wheel! The wagon was giving me about 12mpg! My Chiltons is on the way, but here's one question... The guy in Allentown bypassed the gastank & has a manual switch to turn the gas pump on(under the driver side bed). Where's the original pump belog?

Here's another question: Is the bumper and mirrors pictured below from a dealer? The spare's in the bed, I'm not sure where it used to go... And oh yeah!! Check out the crazy handles on the door pillars! (one on each side) Was that some odd 4x4 option or just someones idea of a good mod? I can't figure out what they're for. Maybe I'm supposed to pull the truck out of the mud with these!

I'm hoping to get it up to snuff while it serves as a daily driver.
The engines a bit gutless, but I like it & not a drop of oil or puff of smoke from it so far. It reminds me of driving a VW bug!

The fuel pump is usually mounted to the frame underneath the fuel filler hole, near the filter. Kind of close to the rear wheel. The factory one went in a little U shaped holder. More than likely, the relay went out, so he just wired that switch in to the stock pump.

Those are the same mirrors and bumper mine had on it. Probably just stock.

Never seen those door handles before. Might be cool if the truck had some monster tires on it.

Does your spare still fit underneath with that bumper??
I saw some models have it in the bed, but I don't have mounting hardware there.

the spare goes under the bed on all these trucks except california 4x4 trucks. those had it on a bracket in the bed.

Yah, there's a loong handle that goes in above your license plate and cranks down the holder. It should be fine with that bumper.

The handle is supposed to be stored with those little clippy things behind the seat. More than likely, it's probably long gone.

Not to thread jump, but if any one is interested in it, I have a rear bumper like that but its chrome , and I would say on a scale from 1 2 10, its probably an 8. I can post some pics if your interested. Just alittle F.Y.I.

Welcome to the site. Good luck with your LUV. I was eyeing that one up on eBay. You are probably an hour and a half South of me. I got my last LUV from an eBay sale and was located in Harrisburg. This truck you bought was the 1st one I have seen on eBay from PA since Aug. 2004 when I got mine. Most likely you will want another one if you see one for sale. I did ! I have 3 now Once again, good luck !

Welcome to the site. I visit a lot of sites, and this is the best one. Ben has put a lot of cool things on here, including step by step instructions on how to put a in a V8, and there are some awsome trucks in the Projects Gallery. Some really close to being ready for a truck magazine.
As you can see, if you have any questions, you will more than likely get them answered here.
Can't tell about the front bumper, but it looks like bumper guards might have been added. Mirror looks turned vertical from others I've seen. The Luv Handles is a definite new option. Learned something new about the California spare option.

I guess I'm new enough that I couldn't even get a my post to show up last night.

Anyway, I just got ahold of the Clymer manual last night. After driving the truck for a few days, I realize a couple of things about it:

(1)It doesn't like running around in 10 degree weather any more than I do.
(2)an LUV is far easier to parallel park than a 20ft. stationwagon.
(3)chipmunks may have rewired my truck.
(4)65mph is a reality which this truck could accomplish with a little tweaking.
-- This truck has some minor issues, but for now.. it starts every time & gets 28mpg!

Anyway thans again! --I'm sure I'll have some more questions when I get elbow deep into it.
