Well first off, I am having a problem with the oil pan and the crossmember. I have heard that you can notch out the oil pan. Is this a true statement and if so is it hard to do? I kinda thought since most of you guys work on small trucks, that maybe most of the probs I run into will be similar with the chevy. Anyway thanks guys.

when I installed a 350 in a 4x4 S10 blazer I had to notch the oil pan and make the sump deeper to compensate for notching it.
as long as the pickup will reach all the oil and the pan doesn't hit, you should be able to notch the pan.

Are you putting a Ford engine in the Courier? If so, there's lots of different pans with front or middle or rear sumps. Just make sure you get the matching oil pickup. Not sure if Chevy's have the same different pans, but it's worth checking. John

Chevy does have a front sump pan also.It was used in Chevy ll 's with
V8 's . 67 was the last year they used it. I have seen new one listed. Also early ford bronco's used a rear sump pan 77 was the last year for these.
79 and up mid size LTD's and Mustang, Fairmonts ect. also have rear sump pans.255 pans will fit 302 but if you are going with a 351W get one from a Police package Crown Vic 79 - 91 .302 pans are different and will not fit 351 Windsor.

The motor that I am installing is a 351 w out of an 81' LTD. Also, does anyone know if the courier ever had disk brakes?

True a 350 will fit but it is tight. I seen one once and they even had to notch the frame for the starter. The frame is real narrow and most got 302's because it is a narrow engine and works well in tight places. The 351 is a little wider than the 302 but with enough work it will fit.
You may want to notch the crossmember or relocate the crossmember that is causing a problem. Then you don't have to worry about your weld being leak proof.

holley makes a swap kit.
I just happen to have a few minutes and found this.

http://www.holley.com/HiOctn/ProdLine/P ... tml#FordSB
maybe they know what parts to use as well.

if you scroll up it also has mounts for the LUV chevy V8 swap.

Depends on what is hooked to the crossmember in question. Is it just a Cross brace or is it part of the suspenion?Where is it located that it is causing a problem front of engine, rear of engine? What exaclty is hitting ? The rear sump or the little front sump?If it is the front sump you will have to move the crossmember. The front sump is just big enough for the oil pump and you can't do much with it. Some vans have a mid sump you may want to look at that option also.

Hey I have an 82 courier and disc brakes they changed sometime around 77 I also happen to be a ford man since my 69 mach 1 428 super cobra jet back in 1972 back in england . I am looking for a luv to drop a v8 in and have been doing some measuring , the luv looks like a good way to go as the frame looks wider , firewall higher front end more like a truck . this may sound like sacralige but working in the scrap business and building all the engines for me and my old partner , I've built several both ford and chevy and seen the same motors when they died ,the diferences i have found on engines built to more or less the same standard are as follows
chevy a little more power
burns more oil
lasts 1/2 as long
uses more gas
ford a little less power
burns very little oil
lasts twice as long
more economic
If anyone wants a great work engine try a ford 390 9;1 comp regular heads r/v cam edelbrock sp2p manifold holly 600cfm simgle pumper vac secondaries 1in spacer under carb ,no water heated plate in my 69 1ton dualy wieght 7800lb I get 14 mpg and enough torque to pull a house down the last 2 of these I put together did 450000 miles each , the valves were almost through the heads all on regular gas no pinging
Having spouted my bit I am just as happy for all those true blue chevy guys we're all hooked on cars Jim

As you get older and have more aches and pains you will find it easier to use a torch and welder than swing a hammer. The warmth from the hot steel also helps with the soothe the arthiritis.

as a hillbilly hotrodder, i say it is perfectly ok to use a blue-wrench(cuttin torch) to remove a stubborn bolt. then, if a new bolt won't fit in the hole(too loose) then it is perfectly acceptable to use a metal glue gun(welder) to re-install above said bolt
