I'd check where the wiper shafts come through, the inlets for the fresh air vents and between the windshield and dash. Other than those I dunno...

EVERY Luv i have ever owned or operated (and bear in mind I was driving these things brand new back in 1978) has had this problem, some of it is from around the wiper shafts as discussed.I have sealed sevral of these trucks there but STILL the problem remains........and is a mystery to me to this day.The man to talk to about this would be "800xl"....if ANYone has the answer it will be him. I am going to watch this post and see if i just may be able to learn something and solve this problem in my trucks as well.

Pics? Did someone say pics? I just did the shaft fix on my new2me 79 and took enough pics to do a full step by step write up. I'll get them off the camera, onto the server, and drop a couple of the choice ones in this thread in a few. Anything in particular that you'd like to see?

Here are a few shots. I maybe be going back and taking some more pics soon. Some of them didn't quite turn out right, and I'm missing a couple of steps.

Before the fix:
Image

When you take off the cowl cover, be sure none of these deals come out and get lost. They are right under the windshield and the cowl has tabs that stick into them to hold the back side of it down. This shot also shows the bare shaft and plastic tube that it comes up through.

Old stock boot next to a spark plug boot replacement:

Boot stuffed with grease and installed on the shaft.

Just to put more info into one place, here is a link to the old write up I did:
http://forums.luvtruck.com/viewtopic.php?t=849

Some notes:

Have a shop vac ready. You are bound to have a ton of gunk under the cowl and it can contribute to leaks. Water can follow leaves back into the heater and vent intakes.

Don't forget to put the foam deal back around the shaft before you put the cowl back on. I have a pic of that if needed. Without it, the cowl can rattle around some. Also, those black plastic grommet deals can be a source of leaks. When I did this last one I popped them out and sealed them back in with a little silicone goop.

If that does not get it, you probably have a leak around the windshield gasket somewhere. Originals and especially replacements seem to have a weak point in the bottom center. Mine is a replacement done a number of years ago and it actually split right and that center joint. Silicone sealer did the trick. I found some at a parts store that is made for windshield sealing that worked well. It is made pretty thin so it can run into the same cracks the water is working its way through. I sealed it up with that, but it likes to run off on you. To fill the rest of the crack visible on the outside I'm planning to cover it over with some black RTV that I can at least attempt to make match the profile of the gasket. For now it has solved all my inside water leaks though.

I had(have) this problem with my '76. I doing a resto so I had a easier time spotting my problem since everything was remove from under the dash. To make thing easier I troubleshooted one side at a time by isolating the left and right side by slightly jacking the car up one side and I remove the cowl the place a hose and let water run down the otherside side. With a good spot light I found that the seams at the upper corners were rusted behind the sealer and leaking through. I also had a couple rusted spots that had pin holes into the compartment. I was surprised how muck water can leak from such a small hole. Watch for leakage around firewall access holes for the wiriing and throttle linkage the seals could be bad.

I sealed the holes with a product from Eastwood called "seam sealer". It's made for sealing body joints, messy but real good stuff.

I hope this helps you find the source of the problem

That is a good point. With all the crud that collects under the cowl it can hold moisture almost year round and get some pretty bad rust going. Another thing to look for when pulling this all apart. So far I've been luck not to find much body rot down there in any of my trucks. My parents 78 full size Chevy has that problem though. The seam seal rotted away and has started to leak. On those trucks it mostly leaks onto the motor side of the firewall though.

The space under the cowl collects a lot of water from the windshield and other areas. It is where all that water collects and runs off through. A leak in there has access to a lot of water flowing over it, so it can let in a surprising amount.

Just my thought but back in my older cars and trucks if the drain from crowel to ground cloged the water came inside. when I run a coat hanger into them and they cleared all was fine. dont know if a luv has them or not but might wanna check it out. just my opinon on it
