 Post subject: VIN????
PostPosted: Mon Aug 09, 2004 9:30 pm
I mentioned before that I have the opportunity to purchse two luv's... One of my problems is this... The guy has had them for a while. he bought them from a car repair shop that obtained them because they were dropped off and then abandoned... Therefore, the guy I might purchase them from has no title.. I guess I'll have to apply for a salvage title, or an abandoned vehicle title.. The problem is that on the '76, I can not find a clear print of the VIN. on the driver side door panel, there is a sticker with the VIN, however, a few of the #'s/letters have been rubbed off. I know that the VIN should be on the engine somewhere, I just don't know where, and due to the dirt/leaves, and rust, it isn't just jumping out at me. Can anyone tell me EXACTLY where on the engine it would be????

Thanks!

as far as I know the engine has its own number but its not the vin.
The last 4 of the vin should be stamped to the left of where the paint code sticker is under the hood. Seems like there might have been another place too, but I'm not sure.

The last 8 or so of the vin are stamped into the cab under the cowl cover. (part the wiper shafts stick up through) If you pull that off you will find at least the serial number portion of the vin there on the driver's side, the rest can be infered for the most part (model, year, and manuf loc info) if the door sticker doesn't have it. There *should* be a vin tag on the door pillar just under the latch striker on the driver's side. Small metal tag normally held on with 2 rivets. I wouldn't trust the door sticker anyway as doors may come and go. If the metal tag is gone I'd be suspicious right off as there are few reasons to remove it that don't involve something being fishy. You might find that truck's VIN is running around on another truck somewhere else.

On the engine number, I think diarmadhim is right it is not related to the VIN as far as I know.

You might call the DMV and start figuring out what you will need, and if you can sorta run the VINs prior to making a deal on these just to be sure they don't come up as stolen.

absolutely! I have already downloaded the appropriate paperwork to fill out, which is why I'm looking for the VIN. It's the only part that I need, but cannot find.

The other question I have is about the military. I was told that the air force used these trucks alot in the late 70's. I don't know how it is, exactly, but don't x-military vehicles get tittle differently?

The dude isn't asking much for both of them; he really wants to free up his backyard (he has already sold 4 cars last month, and needs to clear up the corner that these guys are in). I figured at worst I could part them out and make a few bucks???? You guys are great! Thanks!
