You may find some aftermarket converted ones from 78 and older but the official factory ones came in 79. There were a few places doing brand new truck 4x4 conversions back in the day and plenty of people have done them on their own since. Usually the converts are solid front axle, not IFS like the factory 4x4.

I know I've seen one truck that had factory 4x4 that was said to be a 78, but I think it was a case of cab/vin swap. It is possible that a few snuck into the US before 79 though, and if you go outside the US I won't make any claims to know anything for certain. ;)

79 was the first year. The old conversions used jeep dana 30s for the front. The same comapnies also did Toyota and Datsun conversions.
