I am wondering if my 1980 luv with the stock 1.8 should have a radiator overflow tank ? My good luv doesn't have one, but my new purchase does. It looks like it was added on, but maybe I am wrong and my good luv just had it taken off. Also I thought that there was another fuel filter under the hood on the battery side, so I bought 2 fuel filters, but I am thinking that what I thought was a fuel filter is actually a check/relief valve ? It looks identical to the fule filter, but upon removing it, it was dry as a bone. Is this a part that is necessary ? My good luv doesn't even have this part, just the hose running into the carb.

Yes they came with overflows. none of my trucks have the original anymore.
I think they must have gotten brittle and broke up or something.
the only reason there should be a filter in the engine compartment, is if someone added it. I'd say go ahead and stick another one in there.
I llike to use the ones you can see through, just so you can make sure everything is flowing ok.

None of my LUVs ever came with an overflow tank. I don't believe they came stock with one, just a catkiller hose coming out behind the bumper. I've added them to each truck I've had. Anything that has a chance of helping a LUV cool itself is a good idea.

The only stock fuel filter was the one under the bed behind the wheel. It is nice having a little extra piece of mind under the hood though, and like diarmadhim said the see through kind helps in troubleshooting. There are two hoses to the carb, the feed and the return line. Feed is larger, return is the smaller one. If the filter got stuck on the return line for some reason it might not have much gas in it. It also might just have been draining back towards the tank on its own.

When I had a Weber on, I stuck a small filter on with a built in return because the Weber carb only had an inlet.

I've never seen a stock Luv with a coolant recovery system either. As for having fuel line filters in the engine bay, my truck did when it was stock. It was the early motor and the filter sat on a bracket that was bolted to the drivers side inner wheelwell between the fuse block and the master cylinder. I still have a picture of it if anyone wants to see it.

I coulda swore my first luv had a stock recovery tank in it.
I guess not, looking in the manual there's not a word or pic of a recovery tank.

Oh yeah, I forgot about those early trucks having a filter up there sometimes. I really need to fill out my collection with one of each year I guess. :P

Thanks for the info. The fuel filters I bought are the see through kind. I have to look at the filter (or check valve) under the hood and see exacty what line it is connected to. I was reading something about the vapor tank, and thought I saw something about a check/relief valve. But could be that this is just another fuel filter that has been dry for years ? When I figure it out I will let you guys know. Maybe will try to get it worked out this weekend. Thanks again.

There is a relief valve for the tank vent system. It's located on the firewall just towards the center from the washer fluid tank. There are 3 lines at the valve, one that goes to the air cleamer assy, another line that goes to the oil pan and the 3rd will go to a metal line back to the vapor tank above the fuel tank. This valve handles vapor pressure in the fuel tank. When you go to fill the tank, there will be some pressure escaping when you remove the gas cap. This will be normal and you can forget about it. As for having a check valve on the fuel line, i've never heard of one. Try and bypass it with a fuel filter and see what happens.
Now that the truck is set up with a coolant recovery tank, make sure that the radiator cap is the right kind. If the cap has a lever on it to release pressure, it's not the right one for the system. It needs to be the standard type cap that will release pressure and draw coolant.

Now that I think about it I think I know what check valve you are referring to. What I am asking about is not that one, so it must be just another fuel filter that was installed that has just been dry for years. I will throw on the 2nd fuel filter that I bought and see if this is the case. I believe the radiator cap is the standard kind, there is no lever on it to release pressure. The overflow tank is empty right now. I will work on that after I get it running, if I even get it running ! :D Thanks again for the info.
