I have bought a 1980 luv 4x4 but there are no markings on the Hurst shifter indecating the high and low. If anyone can tell me the pattern or where to go find it , that will be great. :( :D

Assuming this is a stock 4 spd 4x4 trans the pattern is like this:

Down and right is 2HI
Up (forward) and left is 4HI
Down and left is 4LO

The pattern is sort of like an upside down U, push the lever forward from 2HI and then it can move left into 4HI, from there pull it straight back into 4LO.

When I'm 4 wheelin' and I run it in 4hi it always seems to pop back into 2hi unless I have someone hold it in place. Is this a common problem?

I have ran into that very same problem w my blue 4x4, when towing a heavy car or something I use 4wd and mine will pop out of gear in 4 low....I then have to stop and start over, and im good for 10 miles or so till it does it again. Have never figured out whats causing this but if and when i do( cause one day I will put in one of my extra trannys) I will be sure an let everyone know what i find wrong when i tear that thing down, Im thinking of making the swap before winter and then ill have have something to putter with indoors when it gets cold.

Popping out of 4HI and 4LO is pretty common with a body lift. Even without lift the shifter is a tight fit in the hole in the floorboard. If you have body lift, you need to make the hole quite a bit larger. My 79 would drop out of 4LO when I would reverse, but managed to stay in 4HI just fine. A little trimming on the shifter hole and all was well. I've been toying with the idea of modding the shifter to do a shorter throw in order to make it work a little better without so much cutting, but I have not had the time.
