Is it possible to get what you pay for? I have been dealing with a machine shop for years and now I have some major problems.
I had my engine work done last year on a 427 for my truck and they said the crank would polish and go back standard. I ask him more than once and on different days and he said standard. He even had me take the bearings so he could check the clearance, and balance everything.
I get everything out and start to put it together and the first main I check won't even start to mash the plastigauge. I know plastigauge is not the best way to measure it but it sure will give you some idea, and its not even close.
I borrowed a micrometer and I am getting about .012 under on the mains and .010 on the rods. I know people make mistakes and maybe he was thinking it was standard and it was .010 but if he had checked the clearance as he said he did he would have caught it . I bought .010 bearing and still have too much clearance.
I am not sure I can get the needed clearance without going .020 on the mains. Now I am wodering about eveything else . Is it done correctly or even done at all, and I have a balance job that is probably going to get screwed up by grinding the crank!!
