someone told me at a dealership that torsion springs never wear out. i have adjusted mine just barely enough to get a stiffer ride but not enough to change the ride height in the front end. when i hit a bump, the front end bottoms out badly. i have new shocks that dont suck too bad but it still bottoms out. does anyone know if the springs ever need replaced?

i have the same problem.get under your truck and take off the rubber bumbers.the bumpers are about 2 inches thick so it'll give you some extra clearance.but be warned, take the big bumps slow.if you don't you'll mess up your alighnment with about 5 other things(like i did).i'm not sure about the springs.hopefully someone else knows cause i'd like to know now.

While I am no expert (just another pion as the Mrs. says), any type of metal that is subjected to continuous load reversal is going to eventually wear out. The torsion bar is nothing but solid barstock that is twisted a small amount. After time, and who's LUV isn't older than 20 or so years, the "memory" that the steel has is going to being to fade. Kind of like us don't you think? Now where was I, oh yea, combine this with the enviornment the bars have been exposed to such as heat, cold, salt water, etc., of this begins to permiate the torsion bars as well as the rest of the vehicle and does take it's toll. Now I am not saying this IS what happens, but as I am in the air force and my carrer field is aircraft structural maintenance, I have to deal with problems similar to this on a daily basis. If you want to try other bars, give me about a month and I can send you mine for the cost of shipping (might be a bit high as they are heavy) since I am changing my front suspension to coil springs so the exhaust can be run through the chassis. By the way, I live in Las Vegas, Nevada.

you are a structural mechanic on aircraft in the airforce? it just so happens that i am a certified, bonefied, crazy-eyed (that one is mine  ) a&p mechanic. i work on everything from 152's to canadaire challengers. i do alot of structural repair and sheet metal work. mostly i do engines and systems though. small world eh? n e way, i'm thinking of a coil-over shock conversion to make it ride stiffer but more forgiving in the front (did that make sense?) but thanks for the offer on your springs. it would probably be cheaper in the long run if i just drove out to nevada (might have a job interview anyway) and drove the springs back myself! :D later!
