Photobucket has chosen to hold my photos hostage until I pay them $400 a year for third party hosting . I have deleted my account . Feel free to delet my build threads due to no images . I will be researching another host for images and will go from there.

This has been an active topic on the PlanetIsuzoo.com forum (and probably many others lately. This is one of the main reasons NOT to use third party image hosting (photobucket, flikr, etc.), especially on forums like this one, where images can be attached to the posts. In the early days, that was not the case--but since about 2006, this forum software has allowed attachments directly.

So I've probably been annoyingly naggy over the years, about using the upload feature rather than using 3rd party image sites (Sorry!). But this is one of the reasons why. There are others, if anybody wants to hear my rant, but if not, I'll zip it.

I'm curious, will they let you at least download your pics if you decline to pay? I think it's just "hotlinking" (otherwise called "deep linking' or "inline linking") that they want to charge for. Honestly, I'm amazed nobody saw this coming. Inline linking denies them the possibility of revenue, and it's been a completely unsustainable business model all along. Lots of sites block it, but photobucket has been slow coming around to this option.

Photobucket's explanation (including what they call "hotlinking")

It's affecting sites all over--
Photobucket Just Broke Billions of Photos Across the Web

This is the biggest thread on EVERY forum I am on. Going to make every forum worthless now. I never understood how people wouldn't think "Free" would someday come to an end though. I have my own web space (thanks to Drummerforhire) and I treat is as just another monthly utility bill.

I am not a super computer user . I just go by instructions . It honestly will give me a break . I spend a lot of time updating threads . When the dust settles Ill resume posting . I opted to delete my account vs take the time to attempt to save the images , which would be a struggle for me anyway.

Yes, it is.

On a site that I host, I've always limited "remote" images to 80 pixels high by 120 pixels wide -- just large enough for an avatar, but otherwise useless. That's to discourage the use of photobucket and other 3rd party image hosting sites. It's caused some confusion, but we don't have many images that are now broken. ;)

I hope you didn't think I was talking down. I realize not everybody hosts websites, and this technique isn't exactly intuitive.

But when you're posting, scroll down to the part where it says "Upload attachment". There, you'll see a button to choose the file (picture) you want to upload (it has to be ON the computer or devices that you're editing from). Select it, click "Add the file", and then if you want to put it in a specific place, put your cursor where you want it to go, and click the "place inline" button and it will add it as I've added this image.

You can download your albums on photobucketofchit and save them. Have to do each album individually. I have done that. I believe they are goiong to catch so much flack that they will have to modify their hostage situation, so I am holding off on deleting my account for now...

Just a quick, dirty tip for anyone who tries to upload from mobile and gets the "imagine too big" error...

Open the photo on your mobile device and take a screenshot of it (On iPhone you press the lock button and the home button together) and upload the new screenshot. Screenshots are png files and naturally a smaller file type.

Works most of the time.
