The other night I was driving home and when I switched from high to low beam I was left completely in the dark so I had to be that annoying asshole that drives around with the hi beams on.
Later when I got home and jiggled the switch the low beams came on momentarily so I know it's not the lights themselves .
The cheapest combo switch I've found so far is $150. Is there any way I can install a $10 foot switch and still keep the flash feature ?
Any help/suggestions would really be appreciated.........thanks

Welcome to the site. Please tell us what you're driving. LUVs did evolve over the years. ;) This is a common issue with 2nd gen LUVs, but I don't know about 1st gen.

Better yet, add vehicle info to your sig.

Ok, that should be repairable. There are some contracts in the signal switch that look like distributor points. They're on springy metal tabs that eventually get where they don't return to their original positions. If you have some slender needle nose pliers, you can bent them back. Unfortunately, you might need to remove the steering wheel and the switch.

I'm using my phone, and I can't get more detailed than that while at work, on my phone. But when I get home to a real computer, if you haven't fixed it, or if nobody else has helped, I'll try to follow up. I have a spare switch, so I may be able to include some photos.

Ok, found a photo. This is exactly how the switch is oriented on the column, looking from overhead (the steering shaft goes through it). Click to zoom in, and notice the contacts that I was referring to. They're to the right of the uppermost yellow paint mark. You just might be able to access them without removing the wheel, but the plastic cover must come off. I think there are four sheet metal screws that attach the top and bottom cover halves together, and one (maybe 2) machine screws (all screws here are Phillips head and pretty small).

Incidentally, I had this problem when the truck was about 10 years old. After re-bending those tabs, it went maybe 15 more years with no trouble. I eventually replaced the switch because my intermittent wiper feature wasn't working -- but the high/low beam switch was still working fine.

Which way should those tabs be bent ? Are they in the proper position as we see them in the picture ?

Without having one in my hand, I'm not sure. But if you cycle between high, low, and pull all the way back to the "flash" position, you should be able to watch the movement if the contacts, and see which ones are almost-but-not-quite making connections.

No, I pick at it now and again but nothing has worked to date....... Thanks for your help, I appreciate it. I found a switch for $160 but I'm still considering installing an old style $10 foot switch . Meanwhile I'm driving in daytime !

You can get a used switch from any 1981-1986 Isuzu P'up or 1984-1991 Isuzu Trooper. I had a few but sold all but one (my spare). I'll check again, just in case I might have two.

Some of them have the intermittent wiper feature. Trucks after '83 (that would be P'ups only) were pre-wired for this feature. I'm pretty sure the 1981 models (LUV & P'up) were not, but I'm completely uncertain about the '82 models. So, the only switches I've ever salvaged were with intermittent wipers. However, I've found that the timing circuit for the intermittent position tends to fail over time, so that feature no longer works. Anyway, if I have a spare switch it has the intermittent position--but ever one of the last few I've found, the feature didn't work.
