Hi Guys

It looks like I may be coming into possession of a 74 twin headlight Luv styleside that has been in my family for some time.

I know that the Aussie cars came equipped differently to the USA cars. This Luv has the 1.6l Isuzu engine however I am wondering if someone can tell me whether it is the pushrod G161 or the SOHC G161z? I will not be able to view the car for a few weeks and am looking at what my options are with the engine. If the engine is the SOHC variety then most of the performance parts designed for our Australian Holden Gemini will work and make things much easier for me.

Thanks in advance

Nicko

im pretty sure its the ohc g161z the same as your Gemini's, but not 100% we got the g180z so I would think yours is just the smaller of the same series. im pretty sure you have seen ozgemini.com right? great place for the info on the motors

thanks love4theluv.

Yeah I am lurking on the OZGemini site and a friend of mine has had 2 different turbo Geminis but for the life of me I can't seem to find a definitive answer on the Gemini forum or any forum regarding whether the engine was the Pushrod or the OHC engine. All the wiki info etc is about the G180z American delivered cars.

I guess I will have to wait a few weeks untill I can get in front of the car and have a look.

All my genuine parts catalogs tell me the 74 Aus spec Luv will have the g161 pushrod engine, same as found in Isuzu Bellet and a real p.i.t.a to find parts.

Very hard to say on the Aussie delivered stuff. Here in the US we had just two different G180 variants, neither was a pushrod, both SOHC. The model designators were the same but the motors are as different as night and day. The earlier models (72-75) had intake and exhaust come out the same side of the head(left), and the later models (76 and up) had a cross flow head with intake on right exhaust on the left. (as viewed from the seat looking forward) The early motor also has two timing chains with a jack shaft in the middle to connect things.

I have not seen much for the earlier Isuzu motors, but I know the early iron head non-crossflow Bellet 4Cyl that was the ancestor of the LUV motor as we know it was a pushrod design. It would be interesting to see pics and I bet we'd recognize some parts going back even into the 1960s.

Double Ouch.

This motor has the intake on the left hand side if you are sitting in the cab looking towards the front of the car.

I found an old pic.

Can anyone tell?

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

I am thinking due to the non cross flow head that it must be a pushrod motor.

Disapointing really, but I should be able to get a g161z fairly easily

Looks like a push rod motor to me, I don't see enough room for a timing chain in front of the engine.

That pic is the g161 non crossflow engine same as found in Isuzu Bellet. Iv'e parted out a few Luvs and always sent them style engines straight to scrap, as the parts availability and demand for them was zero. The g161z is not a drop in replacement for the g161 either as the engine mounts are in different locations.

I have a '73 with modified mounts to suit a G161z. The mounts don't look too complicated.

I don't need the mounts or the motor anymore... its also got a 5 speed bolted on the back of it if you're interested.

Very interesting. That is an iron head, and I can't see any way there is a camshaft up top so it must be the pushrod motor. I wonder if the motor mounts are like the US 72-75 style or something completely different though. Then again I don't know if you could find the non-crossflow overhead cam G180 motor that we had in the US 72-75 anywhere in AUS anyway. Plus you have clutch/starter issues on the bell housing to worry about. Has that got a cable clutch going in on the right side, or hydraulic clutch? That just looks all kinds of weird compared to what I'm used to seeing over here. :)

If you can get mounts sorted out the crossflow G series would be a good way to go.

I know it's a Isuzu engine but it sure looks like a 70's Datsun engine.

Well that certainly sounds like a confirmation.

Thanks for the offer Matt, It might be a while before I have the truck if all goes to plan and it does end up coming my way. I think I will just wait till I have the thing and suss it out from there. If the time comes I may take you up on that however you are on the other side of the country.....

I am a little deflated but not defeated.

Changing the engine inst a big deal for me and the motor mounts are a minor worry and can be made. Problem is I am halfway through a bare metal nut and bolt resto/rebuild of my 1960 Volkswagen Baja. So I am trying not to embark on any new long winded projects.

Out of curiosity how much were you chasing for the engine and box? Was it a strong engine when you pulled it?

definately, looks the same as my bellett & florian engines, just with a cast head. There is a small demand for these engines still (I have a spare one i am planning on rebuilding). Does the current engine turn over? They are a great little motor. I am dissapointed the 76 Luv I have has the later G161 Gemini motor!
heres a picture of my Florian engine to compare!

Hmm, i thought the early Florian shared the same radiator support panel as the Luv but i can see differences.
