My 16' canoe makes my '79 LUV look tiny. Gets the job done but I would prefer to haul it on a trailer. Sheet metal on roof doesn't have enough support for this.

Jet ski trailers aren't too tuff to come by...

A little modification to the skids would probably be necessary, but it sure would be nice to start with a nearly purpose-built platform like that.

I'd be curious to see your eventual solution.

You can get real cheap trailers at a real cheap price sat Harbor Freight Tools. If you don't go too far for you boating, you could probably make one work well for yourself. http://www.harborfreight.com/catalogsea ... ?q=trailer

Here's an idea I came up with, a removable bed rack so I don't have the hassle of a trailer. I took some measurements down to a local welder and he made it up for me. He also welded some big eye bolts to the front frame so I can run tie straps to them; at the rear, I run tie straps to the built-in cargo hooks on the tailgate.

The front bracket is an old school luggage rack that clamps to the drip rails; I found it at the local thrift store for a buck. It works great; I've been all over Oregon with it and no problems. I think I'll add some wood strips to the top of each bracket, so there's no metal-to-metal contact on the canoe.

What about using strips of old tire instead of pieces of wood?

That's a great idea! Wish I'd thought of it...

I have thought about making something like that. I work for Lowe's in the ProServices department, dealing with a lot of contarctors with ladder racks on their trucks. My only concern is after I paint my truck, I do not want to scratch it by putting a rack on the roof.... :smt017
