yeah, from the look of it, the guy(s) who stole it pryed open the back window to get in. How they got it started is a mystery to me.

They're not hard to hotwire. Unplug the ignition connector, three pre-made wires with blade connectors, and it's gone...

Good to hear you got it back! I had virtually the same thing happen to my 77 several years ago. On mine they opened the drivers door lock because it was so worn out it would accept most anything as a key. They destroyed the ignition switch with a screwdriver before finally unplugging it and hotwiring it using wire I had under the seat and the haynes manual I had under there too. Like I found it by random luck out looking for it. It was less than a mile away parked in some apartment complex. They stole the ashtray full of change (working lighted ashtray too, bastards) and the truck had fried one of the spark plugs. They hotwired it wrong so the coil resistor wasn't bypassed, full power to the plugs. I think it ran ok for a bit, then started to sputter and stumble when the one plug started to cook, and they parked it. I ended up with a pocket knife, some old padlocks, and some other junk they left in it. The police lifted some partial prints and took a blood sample they left behind when they cut themselves trying to pry loose the ignition. The truck put up a fight, and even started to run poorly trying to shake them off.

I still hope that one day that blood sample will get run and match DNA to someone. I bet its either in a back log of unimportant stuff, or got ran and hasn't matched anything yet. That would also be funny, thief ends up trying to get a job in law enforcement and gets popped by the prints in a background check. ;)

Besides an ignition kill switch you could also put in a fuel pump cut out switch. If its a stock truck it will run for a minute, just long enough to attract attention or maybe start to drive it, then die. I'm guessing they'd give up quick after that.
