I have been told that many (not sure of the number) Luvs were dumped into the ocean during the 1980's. The story goes that a bunch of new diesel Luvs were still on dealer lots for over a year and Chevy decided to do a burial at sea. Supposedly the trucks were dumped off the coast of Puget Sound. Anyone else heard this story?

When I was in High School it was common for Japanese companies to dump excess inventory off the coast of Califorina. I was in a motorcycle class at the time and Yamaha donated a bunch of bike motors to the school for us to learn on. I remember several 650 twin motors new in the crates. They told us then that they were dumping a bunch more stuff in LA Harbor.

So I guess it is a possibility? Luv trucks rusted pretty bad in good climates so I would guess they are pretty disintegrated by now. 8)

Close, oh so close but no brass ring.

Here's the REAL story:
Late 60's early 70's Malcolm Bricklin struck up a deal to import Subaru 360 cars, truck and vans. These are a subcompact or maybe you would call them a sub sub compact. Anyway high gas prices made the import of these small vehicles with a 360 cc motor very tempting. Coupled with a $1297 price tag it was destined for success. Until consumer advocates branded them a death trap due to small size. The sales tanked. Some cars were rerouted into a investment that later Became Malibu Gran Prix. Due to the complete loss of sales Bricklin had the remaining shipments pushed overboard to avoid paying import tariffs when they hit the docks. I have also heard a rumor that some of them that already made landfall were dumped off of Catalina island. As for the 360 truck it is called a Sambar and is quite a bit smaller than a Luv.
Here's a pic of one
