May the expert explain better about the 6 degrees BTDC ignition timing. You mean the firing at any given cylinder at that particular time should take place six degrees before top dead centre,is my understanding right. If so before setting the crank at zero and calm at its mark, firing at #4 we should move the crank at 6 degrees BTDC and set the pump and distributor firing at 4 and later set the crank at zero to align the calm mark.may you please correct me if my understand is wrong. about the algment of the calm and crank it is well illustrated in this picture, but what i need to behelped is about the ignition timming at 6 degrees.does this goes with the setting of the pump and distributor.
if you look at the front of the timing cover on the front of the engine. right behind the lower pulley is a set of numbers with marks for each one looks something like 8 6 2 0 2 6 8 with a dash for every number.. these are the degrees of timing advance. there is a notch on the back of the pulley. once the engine is assembled following the instructions provided EXACTLY as they are written in the book. once you have the engine running you use a timing light.. pointed at the area where the pulley is with the timing marks, it will flash (strobe) at the speed your plug is firing... the strobe will make the notch on the back of the pulley appear to be holding perfectly still... whatever number it is on is where your timing sits... if you loosen the distributor cap bolt VERY SLIGHTLY rotate the distributor cap while keeping an eye on the pulley notch position. you can adjust it to 6BTDC or whatever timing you need (i believe stock is 8BTDC but dont quote me its been a few months
