Copyright laws come into play there. Be careful. I was thinking about one too and if you could give us a review on it, that would be great. I am interested on how the wiring schematics look and if they can be enlarged for easier viewing.

Since these are CDs that are made up of .pdf files containing scanned copies of pages from obsolete shop manuals...I really don't think that there is much of a copyright issue here.

After all, anyone with a shop manual they bought used off of Ebay, a scanner, a free copy of adobe reader, a CD burner , and a few blank CDs could easily make these themselves.

(If they really had a LOT of spare time - that is...lol)

Ben...I believe the simplest way to share them would to be to convert them to an image file (ISO, cue/bin, nero image, etc) then zip that file to upload it somewhere accessable by all of the members here. But if an image file is too difficult for the members to work with...then a simple zip file would probably be OK...it's just going to be a lot larger file to deal with.

If this is something that everyone here wants..I'd be willing to purchase both CDs, and handle getting them both ready to upload their content somewhere in whatever format works best for everyone to download.

I think it's copyright infringement if you are profiting from it, like the guy selling the CDs. If you are posting on here for free, no profit, it's ok. ....I think that's how the law is.

Bentley Publishers company went after people selling one like these on ebay for VW's... Some guy in Russia did it them after that. He just thumbed his nose at them. I think Bentley Publishers thought that was a good idea and they started doing that too.

I am not sure who published the Luv ones, and being that it is no longer in print they may not care. Bentley publishes all the VW service ones and still does. It is all a matter of dollars and cents. Also someone says something to ebay and they are done. I am not sure what copyright laws cover.

When I was the network admin for a small college I had to take care of that stuff. Their were things the library paid for where books could be acceded on line. I remember looking up stuff to trouble shoot problems. I think they had those little repair books on line that you buy at the FLAPS

Since we wouldn't be charging for them and no one besides the members would even know about them, and they wouldn't be for sale on ebay(...lol ...)I would think we'd be OK.

After all...what we are talking about here are basically e-books on disc scanned and copied from old out-of-print tech manuals for an obscure old mini-truck that was discontinued in the early eighties, and that was made for Chevy by Isuzu - a company that no longer makes any passenger cars or trucks for sale in the USA at all.

But don't get me wrong... I do appreciate the hell out of these guys going through all of the trouble to scan in all of the pages of those hard-to-read faded, musty, and greasy old manuals, save them in two great big harder-than-hell-to-search .pdf files, and burn them to a couple of CDs.

However, I doubt seriously if anyone else here admires them enough to pay them around $40.00 US each to buy them (including shipping) and wait however darn long it takes to have them shipped to them, just to look something up when their poor truck breaks down.

BTW...wtf is a FLAPS?? When I Googled it - the only other references I found that didn't have anything to do with airplane wings is about stuff I'm pretty damn sure Ben doesn't want me to post here.....lol

I see tumwatertaz must have come across what I found. I eventually got a download of it if anyone has a need to see what flapping is all about.
Anyway, let's get back on track!

If they are the GM shop manuals, they are technically copyright GM. But you can't buy them from GM anymore, and I don't know if The General would really care if we had these posted on the site. Plus the copyright folks get more mad when you try to make money, rather than disseminate information; technically posting the shop manuals would be no different than the parts drawings we already have posted, those are also copyright GM because they are out of factory parts books.

i say, just post them, and if anything happens, they will just want you to take them down.

i figure thats the worst that can happen.

you dont charge us for membership, you dont make any money off of the manuals...

i think you're safe

GM? Doesn't the government own them? And we already pay them with TAXES.
Shouldn't be a problem.

If you're not the one who runs the site and not the one who posts them, it probably is the worst that can happen. But if so, you might be named in a copyright infringement lawsuit, and it doesn't really matter if you have a case--you lose anyway when you pay your attorney.

Courts have always recognized a doctrine of "fair use". It generally does not include "redistribution" whether for free or paid.

The place appears to be a real business. The copyright infringement is on him. He does offer manuals in paper too, it says. There is a link to their website. GoDaddy registered since 1999. I am sure they might be ticked off. I would not link a copy off of this site, or posted on this site. That way Ben is covered.

Anonymous email and file hosting.

The disks are obviously scans out of a manual, even with some pages marked up in pen from someone by hand. However, the text quality is very good.

The pictures are so-so. In general they are too dark and grainy to make out a lot of detail. But, they will work in most situations. Some are better than others. The wiring diagrams are good.

The convenience is the nicest feature. They are professionally laid out in a .pdf file with a full index so navigation is a snap. I think it's quicker to jump around the pdf than to thumb around an actual book.

I've contacted the manufacturer about some of things we talked about here. I suspect that they will not allow me to post the files for download. There are copyright stickers on the CD's and the cases. I have asked them for individual CD's with each year on one disc for a cheaper price. We'll see what he says.

Here's your answer:

Quote:
Dear faxbook,

Would you consider selling CD's with each model year for less money than the group set, such as this one I purchased?

Dear bcordasco,

Hi - The cost of the CD is the same regardless, and we sell most all of our CDs for the same price. Melanie, Faxon Auto Literature

Wow...that was friendly. :?

It would seem that for the convenience involved...maybe justifying the extra expense would be a tough call for most here.

Once I get the time...I could get a set and find some place off-site to upload them so they can be "evaluated" to see if they are worth purchasing. Then if it the location somehow got out...like say in a PM or something...well poo occurs. :ewink
